Finding a purpose for your old garage door panels: Garage Door Ice Rink

When you invest in a new garage door and go through the whole process of purchasing it, choosing the right colors and models, and through the installation process, you forget all about having to get rid of your old door. Some may think getting rid of old garage door panels can be as easy as just throwing them in the dumpster, but you may be surprised to know that it can cost you up to 500$. This cost is only applicable if your garage door was painted with lead paint, which was banned for about 5 years. So, instead of throwing the panels away and paying the costs, use your imagination and think of a cool project.

Lucky because he was surrounded by garage doors and when a production order went bad, or if the clients wanted to get rid of their old garage door, this man could gather those up for his project. He had the idea of building an ice rink for a very long time but finally turned his dream plans into reality last winter. It took him many hours of strategic planning, and a few hours of putting everything together with the help of his friends and family. He turned his backyard into the ultimate hockey lover’s fantasy. These photos prove it!

Sure, this project is a big one, and you have to be ready to put in many hours of work, but if you have the motivation and the help from friends and family, you’ll enjoy the process, no doubt! First, round up the panels you think on using, then measure the outlines of your desired ice rink on a flat surface in your backyard. Once the area is set up, begin building your rink by framing the perimeter with your garage door panels. A good idea would be to strengthen the perimeter with rink brackets, either commercially or homemade constructed. You can use landscaping rebar or spikes pounded into the ground to support the boards. Next step is to put a plastic tarp on the rink area. This last step will hold the water and will allow you to flood your rink, with or without snow. And there you go! Your dream ice rink, just feet away from your front step!

You might say, “I don’t have enough panels to make an ice rink!” which is understandable. As he worked at a garage door company, he was able to gather more worn out panels than individuals who work elsewhere. This is why we provided you with other smaller, yet very creative projects you can do with less panels, and with less time and effort.

Now go on and brainstorm for ideas of creative projects you can do with recycled garage door panels. Project you can do on your own, or with the help of your family members. You’ll be surprised with what you can create!
